A Black personal injury lawyer serving Beaumont and the Golden Triangle

Korey Huff is a Beaumont personal injury lawyer who represents people across Beaumont and Jefferson County who were hurt in car and truck wrecks, plant and refinery accidents, motorcycle crashes, falls and other accidents that were not their fault. The Huff Law Firm is Black-owned, and we built it around one promise: the insurance company does not get to decide what your injury is worth.

Beaumont is a working town. Refineries, chemical plants, the port and I-10 put heavy trucks and shift-change traffic on local roads, and the injuries that come out of that are serious ones. Jefferson County juries have a long record of holding big companies accountable, and we prepare cases with that jury in mind.

No attorney fee unless we win. The consultation is free and the fee comes out of the recovery.

A lawyer, not a call center. When you call, you talk to someone who can start your case tonight.

Personal injury cases we handle in Beaumont

Car accidents

Rear-end and lane-change crashes on I-10 between the Neches River bridge and the Orange County line, T-bones at Dowlen and Phelan, head-on wrecks on the two-lane highways to Sour Lake and Winnie. Car wrecks are most of what we do, and we built a full page on them: Beaumont car accident lawyer.

18-wheeler and commercial truck crashes

Tanker trucks, flatbeds and contractor crew trucks run I-10, US-69 and Highway 73 around the clock. A truck case may involve federal driver-hour rules, black-box data and a corporate insurance policy, and the company's lawyers are often working the day of the crash. We work to lock down the evidence fast.

Refinery, plant and industrial injuries

ExxonMobil, Motiva, Valero, Total and the contractors that serve them employ tens of thousands of people in the Golden Triangle. Some Texas employers do not carry workers' compensation, and an injury on site may involve a contractor or equipment maker rather than your own employer. In those cases you may have a full injury claim, not just a comp claim. We can sort out which.

Motorcycle accidents

Riders on Highway 73, Highway 105 and the I-10 feeders get blamed for crashes they did not cause. We use the physical evidence and witnesses to show who actually failed to yield the right of way.

Pedestrian and bicycle accidents

College Street, Washington Boulevard, 11th Street and MLK Parkway have long stretches without safe crossings. Drivers almost always say the pedestrian "came out of nowhere."

Slip, trip and fall

Wet floors at Parkdale Mall or H-E-B, broken stairs at an apartment complex, unlit parking lots on Dowlen. Property owners may be responsible when a dangerous condition they knew or should have known about causes an injury and they failed to use reasonable care.

Rideshare, Uber and Lyft accidents

Which insurance pays may depend on what the driver's app was doing at the moment of the crash. We can sort that out whether you were the passenger, the other driver or on foot.

Wrongful death

When a crash or a workplace accident takes a family member, Texas lets the spouse, children and parents bring a claim for their loss. We handle these cases with the care they deserve.

Why injured Beaumont families choose The Huff Law Firm

A Black-owned firm in a city that is nearly 50 percent Black. Beaumont and Port Arthur have deep Black communities, from the South End to Pear Orchard to the West Side of Port Arthur. Korey Huff built this firm so clients have a lawyer who listens to them and fights like it is his own family.

If your case can be filed in Jefferson County, a Jefferson County jury may ultimately decide what your evidence proves and what damages to award. We prepare with that possibility in mind when gathering evidence and negotiating with the insurance company.

We treat plant and truck cases like what they are. Preservation letters, black-box downloads, driver logs, contractor agreements. The refinery contractors and trucking companies are ready for a fight the day of the accident. So are we.

You talk to the lawyer. Not just an intake screener or a case manager. Lawyers handle your case.

No upfront cost. We advance the costs of experts, records and filings. You pay no attorney fee unless we win.

How a personal injury claim works in Texas

Texas is an at-fault state. The person or company whose carelessness hurt you, and their insurance company, may owe you for the harm. We work to prove four things: they had a duty to be careful, they were not, that failure caused your injury, and the injury cost you something.

The 51% rule

You may recover as long as you were not more than 50% responsible, and your recovery is reduced by your share. A 20% fault finding on a $100,000 case could mean $80,000. Adjusters know this, which is why their first move is often to put a percentage on you. Our first move is working to take it off.

Texas insurance minimums are low

Texas minimum auto liability coverage is $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per crash for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage. One ER visit at Christus St. Elizabeth can pass that. We look for every policy that may apply: the at-fault driver's, an employer's if they were working, a contractor's or plant owner's if the injury happened on site, and your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Who actually pays

Almost never the person who hurt you. Their insurer pays, and the adjuster who calls to "check on you" is building a file that may be used against you. Do not give a recorded statement before you talk to a lawyer.

What your Beaumont injury case may be worth

No honest lawyer gives you a number on the first call. Here is what goes into the number.

Type of damages What it covers
Medical expenses ER, surgery, imaging, physical therapy, medication, and future care
Lost wages Paychecks you missed, and reduced earning capacity if you cannot return to the plant, the rig or the road
Pain and suffering Physical pain, past and future
Mental anguish Anxiety, sleeplessness, fear of driving, PTSD
Physical impairment Loss of the ability to do what you did before
Disfigurement Scarring, burns and permanent visible injury
Property damage Your vehicle and anything else destroyed
Wrongful death Loss of companionship, support and inheritance for the family
Exemplary (punitive) damages Extra damages for gross negligence: a drunk driver, a company that ignored a known hazard

The insurer's opening offer typically covers the first line only. Our job is working to recover the rest of the table.

How long you have to file in Texas

Typically two years. Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code § 16.003 gives you two years from the date of injury. Wrongful death claims run two years from the date of death.

Shorter and different deadlines may apply:

City of Beaumont, Port Arthur, Jefferson County, BISD, Beaumont Municipal Transit or any Texas government vehicle or property: written notice may be due within six months, and some city charters may require it sooner.

Injured on the job at a plant or refinery: if your employer carries workers' compensation, you generally need to report the injury to your employer within 30 days and file a claim with DWC within one year. A separate injury claim against a contractor, equipment maker or non-subscribing employer generally has its own two-year filing deadline. Getting both right early matters.

Federal vehicle or federal property (USPS, a federal employee on duty): an FTCA claim generally must first be presented in writing to the appropriate federal agency within two years after it accrues. A separate deadline to sue generally runs six months from the mailing of a final written denial. Ask a lawyer to check which rules apply.

Minors: the clock generally waits until the child turns 18, but the parents' claim for medical bills runs on the normal two years.

Miss a deadline and the case may be lost no matter how strong it was. Call early, even if you are not sure you want to sue.

What to do after an injury in Beaumont

Get medical care the same day. Christus St. Elizabeth on Calder is the region's trauma center; Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas on College Street and the Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur are the other ERs. If you waited days, the insurer may argue you were not really hurt. Tell the doctor everything that hurts, not just the worst thing.

Get the report. For a crash, Beaumont PD, Port Arthur PD, the Jefferson County Sheriff or DPS typically file a CR-3 crash report; we can pull it for you. For an injury at a plant, make sure an incident report is filed and ask for a copy. For an injury on someone's property, ask the manager for an incident report and photograph it before you leave.

Photograph everything. The scene, the hazard, the vehicles or equipment, your injuries today and again each week as they change.

Get names. Witnesses, the supervisor or manager on duty, the other driver's insurance card, the contractor's company name.

Do not post about it. Insurance companies read social media.

Do not give a recorded statement or sign anything from the other side's insurer, or from a plant's claims adjuster, without speaking to a lawyer first. You are not required to.

Call a lawyer before the adjuster calls you back. 1-877-HIT-MEUP is answered 24 hours a day.

What happens after you call us

Day 1: Free case review. We listen, tell you honestly whether we think you have a case, and if you do, we may sign you up by phone or video. We work to notify every insurer right away to stop contacting you.

Weeks 1–4: Evidence and treatment. We pull the police or incident report, inquire about video from businesses and traffic cameras before it is overwritten, collect photographs, and work to get you to doctors in Beaumont who will treat you now and wait to be paid from the settlement.

Months 1–6: You heal, we build. As treatment progresses, we work to gather available records and bills, document your lost wages, and consider bringing in experts if the case needs them.

Demand. When treatment is done or your long-term picture is clear, we work to send the insurer a demand laying out what we believe they owe. Many cases settle in the weeks that follow, or before trial.

Lawsuit if needed. If the insurer will not pay what we believe the case is worth, we may file in Jefferson County district court. Most cases still settle before trial.

You could get paid. We negotiate down the health insurance and medical liens so more of the settlement stays with you, and you receive your check with a full accounting of every dollar.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a personal injury lawyer cost in Beaumont?

Nothing up front. The Huff Law Firm works on a contingency fee: the consultation is free, we advance the case costs, and our fee is a percentage of what we recover. If we do not win, you owe us no attorney fees.

I was hurt at a plant or refinery. Do I have a case?

Possibly. If a contractor, an equipment maker or another company's employee caused the injury, you may have a full injury claim in addition to any workers' compensation benefits. If your employer does not carry workers' compensation, you may be able to sue them directly. A free review can sort out which applies.

Should I take the insurance company's first offer?

Almost never. First offers are usually made before the insurer knows the full extent of your injuries. Once you accept, you likely cannot reopen the claim even if you need surgery later.

What if I was partly at fault?

You may still recover in Texas as long as you were not more than 50% responsible. Your recovery is reduced by your percentage.

How long does a personal injury case take?

Some cases settle without a lawsuit. If the insurance company makes a fair offer, filing suit may not be necessary. If the offer falls short, we may recommend filing suit. In our experience, cases often settle for more after suit is filed, but that process can take longer. Your treatment, the evidence and the insurance company’s response all affect the timeline. We work to keep your case moving and explain the options before you decide whether to settle.

Will I have to go to court?

Probably not. Most injury cases settle. But we prepare cases as if they will be tried, because that is what tends to produce fair offers.

Who pays my medical bills while the case is pending?

Your health insurance, your auto PIP or MedPay coverage, or doctors who agree to treat you under a letter of protection and wait for payment. At the end, the at-fault party's insurer may reimburse those costs as part of your settlement.

Why does Jefferson County matter?

If your case can be filed in Jefferson County, a Jefferson County jury may ultimately decide what your evidence proves and what damages to award. We prepare with that possibility in mind when gathering evidence and negotiating with the insurance company.

Does it matter that your firm is based in Houston?

No. We represent clients across Texas and handle Beaumont cases in Jefferson, Orange and Hardin County courts, 90 minutes down I-10. We can meet by phone, video or in person wherever you are.

Why does it matter that you are a Black-owned firm?

Whatever the background of the firm, clients should have a lawyer they trust in the room. Beaumont is nearly 50 percent Black, and we are proud to be a Black-owned firm that listens to its clients and fights as hard as they would fight for themselves.
