A Black car accident lawyer fighting for Jefferson County families

Korey Huff is a Beaumont car accident lawyer who represents people hurt in car wrecks across Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, Vidor, Nederland and Jefferson County. The Huff Law Firm is Black-owned and was built on one promise: the insurance company does not get to decide what your injury is worth. We do, and if they will not pay it, a Jefferson County jury can. Speak with a Port Arthur car accident lawyer about your options.

Beaumont and Port Arthur are nearly 50 percent Black, and The Huff Law Firm is proud to be a Black-owned firm serving them. When you have been hurt and the adjuster is already trying to blame you, it matters to have a lawyer you trust in the room.

No attorney fee unless we win. Free consultation; the fee comes out of the recovery.

A lawyer, not a call center. When you call, you talk to someone who can start your case tonight.

Where car wrecks happen in Beaumont

TxDOT recorded 6,880 crashes in Jefferson County in 2025. Heavy trucks and highway traffic are part of the local driving picture. These are the places Beaumont drivers get hit:

I-10. The stretch from the Neches River bridge through downtown to the Orange County line is one of the deadliest sections of interstate in the country. Constant construction, two-lane bottlenecks, and tanker and container trucks running between Houston and Louisiana make rear-end and lane-change crashes a daily event. The I-10/US-69 interchange is the worst single spot in the county.

US-69, US-96 and US-287 (the Eastex Freeway). The main route north to Lumberton and south to Port Arthur. High speeds, short merges at Dowlen and Delaware, and refinery shift-change traffic at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Dowlen Road and Phelan Boulevard. Beaumont's retail corridor. T-bone crashes at Dowlen and Phelan, Dowlen and Delaware, and the Parkdale Mall entrances, usually a driver running a light or turning left across traffic.

College Street, Washington Boulevard and 11th Street. Older in-town roads with heavy pedestrian traffic, unprotected left turns and poor lighting. Many South End and Pear Orchard drivers are hit here.

MLK Parkway and Cardinal Drive. The Lamar University corridor and the connector to Port Arthur; speed and student traffic.

Highway 73, Highway 82 and Memorial Boulevard in Port Arthur. Refinery traffic from Motiva, Valero and Total; some of the heaviest truck volume in Texas on surface streets.

Highway 105 and Highway 124. Rural two-lane roads to Sour Lake and Winnie where head-on crashes happen at 70 mph with no median.

If you were hurt on any of these roads, we know the intersections, where the cameras tend to be, and which police agency likely responded.

Why Beaumont car wrecks are different: 18-wheelers and refinery traffic

Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange sit on one of the largest petrochemical complexes in the world. ExxonMobil, Motiva, Valero, Total and dozens of contractors put thousands of tanker trucks, flatbeds and contractor crew trucks on I-10, US-69 and Highway 73 every day, and send tens of thousands of workers through the same intersections at shift change.

That changes a car wreck case in three ways:

The other vehicle is often commercial. A crash with a company truck is not a regular car case. There are federal hours-of-service rules, a black box in the truck, a driver qualification file and a corporate insurance policy worth far more than a personal one. The company's lawyers and adjusters are often at the scene before the tow truck leaves. We work to send a preservation letter right away so the data is not erased.

Injuries are worse. A crash with an 80,000-pound truck at highway speed produces the spinal, brain and crush injuries that end careers. Those cases should be built for trial from the first week, not negotiated from a demand letter.

Jefferson County juries understand. Jurors here have worked in the plants, driven I-10 at shift change and buried neighbors. They have a long record of holding trucking companies and insurers to account, and the insurers know it. We may file in Jefferson County when the facts and venue rules allow it, and we prepare the evidence with a local jury in mind.

If you were hit by an 18-wheeler, a tanker, a work truck or a company vehicle, say so when you call. We can treat it as a truck case from the first minute. An 18-wheeler accident lawyer serving Beaumont can review the truck evidence.

What should I do after a car accident in Beaumont?

Get checked the same day. Christus St. Elizabeth on Calder is the region's Level III trauma center; Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas on College Street and the Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur are the other ERs. Adrenaline hides injuries. If you wait three days, the insurer may argue you were not really hurt.

Get the crash report. Beaumont PD, Port Arthur PD, the Jefferson County Sheriff or DPS typically file a Texas CR-3 crash report within about ten days. We can pull it for you; you do not have to go to the station.

Photograph everything before the vehicles are moved if you can: the cars, the road, skid marks, the other driver's plate and insurance card, your injuries today and every week after.

Get witness names and numbers. On I-10 and US-69, witnesses are usually other drivers who will be gone in sixty seconds.

Note the company name if the other vehicle was a truck, a van or had a logo. Who the driver was working for is worth more than who the driver was.

Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer, and do not sign anything. You are not required to, and nothing good comes from it.

Stay off social media. A photo of you at the crawfish boil becomes "he wasn't in pain."

Call a lawyer before the adjuster calls back. 1-877-HIT-MEUP is answered 24 hours a day.

Who pays after a Texas car wreck?

Texas is an at-fault state: the driver who caused the crash, and that driver's insurer, may owe you for your injuries. Three rules decide how much you actually see.

The 51% rule

You may recover as long as you were not more than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share. A jury that finds you 20% responsible on a $100,000 case could award you $80,000. The adjuster's first job is to put a percentage on you. Our first job is to take it off.

Texas minimums are low

Texas minimum auto liability coverage is $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per crash for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage. One ER visit and an MRI can pass that. That is why we look for every policy that may apply: the at-fault driver's, the employer's if the driver was working, and your own uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) and PIP coverage. Watch Korey explain UM/UIM coverage.

The adjuster is not on your side

The insurer that calls to "check on you" is building a file. Everything you say is written down and used to lower the offer. Let us do the talking.

What is my Beaumont car accident case worth?

No honest lawyer gives you a number on the first call. Here is what goes into the number.

Type of damages What it covers
Medical expenses ER, surgery, imaging, therapy, medication, and the care you will need in the future
Lost wages Paychecks you missed, and lost earning capacity if you cannot go back to the plant, the rig or the road
Pain and suffering Physical pain, past and future
Mental anguish Anxiety, sleeplessness, fear of driving, PTSD
Physical impairment Loss of the ability to do what you did before
Disfigurement Scarring and permanent visible injury
Property damage Your vehicle and what was in it
Wrongful death Loss of companionship, support and inheritance for the family
Exemplary damages Extra damages for gross negligence: a drunk driver, a trucking company that falsified logs

The insurer's first offer usually covers the first line only. Our job is working to recover the rest of the table, in front of a Jefferson County jury if that is what it takes.

How long do I have to file in Texas?

Typically two years from the crash under Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code § 16.003; two years from the date of death for a wrongful death claim.

Shorter deadlines may apply when a government vehicle or road is involved, which in Beaumont happens more than people think:

City of Beaumont, Port Arthur, Jefferson County, BISD or a Beaumont Municipal Transit bus: written notice may be due within six months, and a city charter may require it sooner. The City of Beaumont charter specifies six months. Ask a lawyer to check the applicable deadline right away.

TxDOT road defect on I-10 or US-69: same six-month notice.

Federal vehicle or federal property (USPS, a federal employee on duty): an FTCA claim generally must first be presented in writing to the appropriate federal agency within two years after it accrues. A separate deadline to sue generally runs six months from the mailing of a final written denial. Ask a lawyer to check which rules apply.

Miss a deadline and the case may be lost no matter how strong it was. Call early.

Why hire The Huff Law Firm for a Beaumont car wreck?

A Black-owned firm in a city that is nearly 50 percent Black. Beaumont and Port Arthur have deep Black communities, from the South End to Pear Orchard to the West Side of Port Arthur. Korey Huff built this firm so clients have a lawyer who listens to them and fights like it is his own family.

If your case can be filed in Jefferson County, a Jefferson County jury may ultimately decide what your evidence proves and what damages to award. We prepare with that possibility in mind when gathering evidence and negotiating with the insurance company.

We treat truck cases like truck cases. Same-day preservation letters, black-box downloads, driver logs. The refinery contractors and trucking companies are ready for a fight the day of the crash. So are we.

You talk to the lawyer. Not just an intake screener or a case manager. Lawyers handle your case.

No upfront cost. We advance the costs. You pay no attorney fee unless we win.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth getting a lawyer after a Texas car accident?

If you were injured, typically yes. A lawyer can look for the coverage that applies, gather evidence and challenge an offer that does not account for your injuries. A lawyer also handles the adjusters, the evidence and the medical bills while you recover.

What percentage do lawyers take from a car accident settlement?

Contingency fees in Texas typically run one-third of the recovery if the case settles before a lawsuit and more if it goes to litigation. We put the exact percentage in writing before you sign, and the fee comes out of the recovery.

What is the average settlement for a car accident in Texas?

There is no useful average. A soft-tissue case with a few weeks of therapy and a surgery case on I-10 are different by a hundred times. What decides your number is the severity of the injury, the medical bills, lost work, how clear fault is, and how much insurance is available. We can give you an honest range after a free review.

How much of a $25,000 settlement will I get?

After the fee and after we reduce your medical liens, the goal is more than half, sometimes much more. How much of the lien we negotiate down makes the biggest difference, and that is a big part of what we do.

What should I not tell my lawyer?

Nothing. Tell your lawyer everything: prior injuries, a ticket at the scene, a drink before driving. What we know, we can handle. What surprises us in a deposition hurts the case. Confidential conversations with your lawyer about legal advice are generally protected by attorney-client privilege, subject to legal exceptions.

What are the odds of winning a car accident case?

The large majority of car accident claims settle, and a case with a police report in your favor and documented injuries is strong. Cases are often hurt when people wait to get treatment, give recorded statements, or post on social media. Avoiding those three things helps.

What if the other driver has no insurance?

You may still recover through your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which Texas insurers must offer you. We can check your policy on the first call.

What if I was hit by an 18-wheeler or a company truck?

Call right away. Truck cases involve federal rules, black-box data and corporate insurance, and the company's lawyers are often already working. We work to send a preservation letter immediately.

How long does a car accident case take in Beaumont?

Some cases settle without a lawsuit. If the insurance company makes a fair offer, filing suit may not be necessary. If the offer falls short, we may recommend filing suit. In our experience, cases often settle for more after suit is filed, but that process can take longer. Your treatment, the evidence and the insurance company’s response all affect the timeline. We work to keep your case moving and explain the options before you decide whether to settle.
